The Isadora Duncan Foundation for Single-Parent Families celebrates its 40th anniversary with an event to be held on Wednesday, November 6 in the auditorium of the Sierra Pambley Foundation in León.
This commemoration will feature the participation of many of the people who have made these forty years possible, as well as authorities, civil society representatives, and media. It will also include two discussion panels: one on "The Role of Civil Society in Democracy" and another on "The Role of Single-Parent Families in the European and Global Context". The event will be live-streamed and can be followed from this website.
From its beginnings as a single mothers' association in 1984, this organization has played a crucial role in defending and promoting the rights of single-parent families, both nationally and internationally.
Created by a group of single mothers in an adverse social context, Isadora Duncan was one of the first organizations in Spain to make single-parent families visible and to provide support, challenging stigma and fighting for their recognition as free and autonomous families.
Over time, the association evolved into a foundation, expanding its services to cover other areas of the fight for women's rights and a more just society. Programs for professional training, financial education, support for immigrant women, prevention of gender-based violence, digital literacy, family financial education, combating energy poverty, and initiatives to close the technological gap for girls were created, among others. Additionally, the foundation managed for years the first secular shelter for single mothers in Spain. These efforts, along with its representation in national bodies, such as the Financial Education Plan with the CNMV and the Bank of Spain, and international organizations, such as the UN Economic and Social Council (where it became the first single-parent family organization to participate), have positioned the foundation as a global leader in the field of single parenthood.
This 40th anniversary not only represents a celebration but also a reminder of the Isadora Duncan Foundation's commitment to social justice and equal rights for all families. With impactful events like this and its recent recognition in the National Lottery on August 22, Isadora Duncan continues its mission to give voice and support to single-parent families.
